Double Digit Enrollment Increase


(Huntsville, Alabama) – J.F. Drake State Technical College announces a 28% increase enrollment increase for the Spring-2009 Semester. The enrollment number also represents an increase over the Fall-2008 Semester which had previously held the distinction of the largest enrollment in the college’s history.

J.F. Drake State Technical College offers various levels of education and training ranging from Career Skills Certificates requiring as little as a few months to complete to Career Entry Certificates which can typically be completed in a year or less to an Associates of Applied Technology Degrees requiring approximately two years. These options allow students to tailor their educational and training needs to their personal and professional goals.

“The Drake family continues to be excited with the increased numbers of individuals choosing our college for postsecondary education to include Adult Education, Ready-to Work Training and our diploma, certificate and degree programs. These students represent individuals that are receiving a quality education and that will provide additional skilled workers for the Huntsville/Madison County workforce needs,” comments Dr. Helen McAlpine, President of J.F. Drake State Technical College. “We continue to work closely with state officials and area chambers of commerce to identify high-demand categories of workers. Many of our training programs are consistent with the needs associated with BRAC as well as other business and industry entities throughout the Tennessee Valley.”

While most of the programs experienced growth for the enrollment period, listed below are those experiencing the largest percentage increases for the semester:

Manufacturing and Applied Technologies Division
Engineering Graphics (+70%)
The curriculum is designed to prepare students for work in the field of drafting.

Heating & Air Conditioning (+50%)
The Heating & Air Conditioning program is a certificate curriculum that examines the principles of heating and cooling in controlled situations.

Welding Technology (+60%)
A certificate in Welding Technology includes 29 credit hours with the option take additional specialized courses to improve employment opportunities.

Automotive Technology (+22%)
The Automotive Technology program certificate curriculum is designed to provide the necessary educational background and practical educational training to repair today’s automobile and light trucks.

Business & Engineering Technologies
Accounting Technology (+32%)
The Accounting Technology program prepares students to become financial record keepers covering a variety of areas from personal, to not-for-profit to business accounting practices.

Information Technology (+29%)
An emphasis is placed on hands-on training in the areas of microcomputer operating systems, applications, programming languages and networking equipment. The Information & Communication Technology program prepares graduates for entry level positions such as computer programmer, Database Analyst or Network Specialist.

Culinary Arts/Hospitality Services (+150%)
The Culinary Arts/Hospitality Services program is designed to provide degrees and certificates with core courses in nutrition, food purchasing, cooking, meal presentation and meal serving along with operations and hospitality management.

Health Science Technology
Nursing – LPN (+13%)
Practical Nursing is a comprehensive course of study that combines theory with clinical practice. The curriculum is designed to provide qualified individuals an opportunity to acquire the knowledge, attitudes and skills which will enable them to become safe competent practitioners of Practical Nursing. Upon completion of the program, graduates must successfully pass the National Council Licensure Examination.

Salon Management
Cosmetology (+62%)
The Cosmetology Technology Program is a full-time classroom theory with hands on practice in the laboratory. Graduates are then eligible to take the Alabama State Board of Examination for licensure as a Cosmetologist.

Barbering Technology (+45%)
The Barbering Technology is designed to provide graduates the necessary skills to acquire a position as a Barber or Salon owner.
