Drake State Announces 2014 Graduation Ceremony


J.F. Drake State Community and Technical College will host its 2014 Commencement Convocation on Thursday, May 8 at 6:00 pm at the Von Braun Civic Center, South Hall.  Approximately 308 students will receive diplomas, certificates or associate degrees.  The keynote address will be delivered by the Honorable Mary Scott Hunter, Alabama Board of Education District 8 representative.


Mrs. Hunter grew up on the Alabama Gulf Coast. She graduated cum laude from The University of Alabama in 1995 (Majoring in Humanities and Minoring in German) and went on to The University of Alabama School of Law.  After graduating from law school in 1998, Mrs. Hunter was commissioned as a United States Air Force Lieutenant. She served ten years as an Air Force Judge Advocate General.  As a military attorney she first served in the active duty Air Force, then in the Reserves, and finally in the Alabama Air National Guard - attaining the rank of Major.


Mrs. Hunter and Lt. Col. Jon Shultz, her husband, brought their family back to Alabama in 2006 after serving out their last active duty Air Force assignment in Germany. Mrs. Hunter was in the private practice of law for five years with the Elder Law Firm and then with Siniard, Timberlake, & League.  She joined Intuitive Research and Technology Company in 2012 where she advises and leads the company’s business interests in Compliance, Ethics, and Risk, and assists with Federal Lobbying and Business Development.  In November 2009, Mrs. Hunter announced her candidacy for the Alabama State Board of Education, and in November 2010, she was elected to the position.
