Summer Technology Institute

Drake State Technical College is hosting its seventh annual Summer Technology Institute (STI) through June 22.

The STI is hosting 20 high school counselors and teachers from public institutions within the Drake State service area. The purpose of the institute is to familiarize the participants with the expanding role of technical education in preparing students for 21st century careers and to provide them with firsthand knowledge about the dramatic changes taking place that have affected career entry requirements and working conditions of the modern workplace.

Over the 10 days of the Institute, attendees are participating in “hands-on” classroom and lab learning experiences alongside Drake students.  They are engaging in classroom discussions, hearing lectures on the theory and application of technical disciplines, conducting experiments, and participating in team projects in each of the various program areas of the college.  They are also touring a number of local industries and government agencies where they are seeing and hearing about entry-level job requirements, career opportunities, wage scales, and the working conditions of a variety of local industries.
