POSITION: College Counselor
(Continuation of position is contingent upon grant renewal.)
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Earned master’s degree with emphasis in Personal, Social, Vocational Counseling, Student Development or related field required.
• A minimum of three (3) years of counseling experience in education/related experience required.
• Documented experience in testing data interpretation and analyses required.
• Proficient in word-processing, spreadsheets, and database applications required.
• Effective oral and written communication skills required.
• Documented evidence of experience in Personal, Social, and Vocational Counseling/Student Development or related field required.
• Demonstrated ability to diagnose and develop Support Plans for a diverse student population required.
• Demonstrated exceptional listening, verbal, written, organizational and interpersonal skills required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
The College Counselor will adhere to the general guidelines as specified by the J. F. Drake State Technical College Faculty and Staff Handbook and the Alabama State Board of Education.
• Provide leadership in maintaining an effective counseling program at the College to meet the needs of students.
• Counsel individuals and provide group educational and vocational guidance services.
• Collect, organize, and analyze information about students through records, tests, interviews, and professional services.
• Apprise student interests aptitudes, abilities, and personal characteristics for vocational and educational planning.
• Compile data on occupational and economic information to aid students in making and carrying out vocational and educational objectives.
• Assist students to understand and overcome social and emotional problems.
• Engage in research and follow-up activities to evaluate counseling techniques.
• Seek out and participate in leadership and professional development activities.
• Ensure and facilitate the appropriate, orderly and timely flow of information from units within the Counseling area to the Student Services Management Director.
• Demonstrate an effective level of technological knowledge, skills and abilities.
• Initiate, maintain and assure teamwork among all college units through communication of the priorities of the instructional division.
• Provide assistance as needed with identifying in-service training needs and professional development opportunities for faculty and support staff.
• Demonstrate ethical behavior, loyalty, honesty, and integrity with all colleagues.
• Establish rapport and maintain a positive working relationship with administrators, faculty, staff, students and community agencies.
• Coordinate both part-time and permanent student employment activities.
• Develop administrative procedures needed to support placement and follow-up activities.
• Maintain placement and follow-up records on each student who enrolls at the institution.
• Work closely with the Director of Computer Services to streamline and computerize all placement and follow-up activities.
• Prepare quarterly summary reports detailing placement and follow-up activities.
• Maintain statistical data on quarterly and cumulative placement and follow-up activities.
• Serve as the main interface between business and industry and the college in an effort to secure jobs for our students.
• Work closely with program instructors in a joint effort to assist their students to find suitable employment.
• Maintain a clearinghouse for job announcements directed to the institution.
• Work closely with the Alabama State Employment Service.
• Collect and match student applications for part-time and full-time employment with available jobs.
• Conduct student seminars on resume writing and job-search techniques.
• Assist students in preparing resumes.
• Maintain a bulletin board where all current jobs are posted.
• Coordinate the All-Alabama Academic Team Recognition program, which includes the distribution of the nomination memo to all college personnel, reminding college personnel of nomination deadline, chairing and guiding the selection committee, informing winners, orientating winners on the completion of the nomination packet, scheduling photography for winners, and escorting winners at the Annual All-Alabama Academic Team Recognition program.
• Coordinate the Who’s Who Among American Junior College Students recognition program.
• Coordinate student ADA services.
• Retain and submit documentation as requested to support accreditation efforts.
• Assumes other work related responsibilities as assigned by supervisor(s) and/or President.
SALARY: Appropriate placement on Alabama State Salary Schedule C3
Salary $45,000 - $80,663
