Drake State offers a variety of scholarships both through the college itself as well as through industry and educational partners. The college strives to ensure the information contained here is maintained, but often other opportunities are available through the financial aid office for short term or supplemental programs. Scholarship Application
Scholarships & Eligibility Requirements
J.F. Drake State Technical College Institutional Scholarship - Academic
This scholarship covers the total cost of tuition and is renewed each semester as long as the student meets GPA and attendance requirements.
Priority deadlines for application are as follows:
March 15 - New Students for Fall Semester
March 15 - New & Returning Students for Summer Term
July 15 - Returning Students for Fall Semester
October 15 - New & Returning Students for Spring Semester
The above deadlines are for priority consideration. These dates may change based on availabilty of funds and number of applicants.
The following criteria must also be met for consideration to receive a Drake State Institutional Scholarship:
- Must meet admission requirements
- Must provide high school or college transcript
- Must have letter of reference from a school/college official (principal, counselor or instructor)
- Must be enrolled for 12 hours each semester
- Must have an overall GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
J.F. Drake State Technical College Institutional Scholarship - Leadership
This scholarship covers one-half (50 percent) of the cost of tuition and fees and is renewed each semester as long as the student meets GPA and attendance requirements. Application deadline: March 15
- Must meet admission requirements
- Must provide high school or college transcript
- Must have letter of reference from a school/college official (principal, counselor or instructor)
- Must be enrolled for 12 hours each semester
- Must have an overall GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
Drake State FREE Summer Tuition Scholarship
The Drake Free High School Summer Semester Tuition Scholarship is designed to provide students an opportunity to get an early start on their college studies. The scholarship is available for the summer semester following a student’s high school graduation.In order to qualify an applicant must:
- Be a May 2011 high school graduate from the J. F. Drake State Technical College service area of Madison County, Morgan County or bordering Tennessee counties.
- Have at least a 2.5 grade point average overall
- Apply for the 2010-11 Federal Financial Aid (Pell Grant)
- Plan to enroll in a minimum of three credit hours
Alabama Kidney Foundation Scholarship
Since1975, the Alabama Kidney Foundation has had one purpose: Providing critical services to thousands of Alabamians with kidney disease.The Montgomery Regional Office of the Alabama Kidney Foundation offers a scholarship to individuals who are dialysis or transplant patients or who are the children of such patients.
- $1000 awarded per school year and can be applied toward tuition and books
- Must be an Alabama resident
- Must be a kidney dialysis or transplant patients or who are the children of such patients
- Must be attending or planning to attend college in Alabama
- Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
Applications are avaliable in the Financial Aid Office.
Application Deadline: July 1, 2011
Grainger Scholarship Fund
Grainger will offer four (4) $2500 scholarships to students who have completed at least 50% of the following programs:
- Electronics Engineering Technology
- Industrial Systems Technology
- Graphics Engineering Technology
Students may also be enrolling for the first time in the following programs:
- Automotive Systems Technology
- Heating and Air Conditioning Technology
Applicants must have a 2.0 GPA verifiable by transcripts, plan to enroll for at least 12 semester hours for Fall 2011 and submit a 150 word essay explaining the need for financial assistance.
Applications are avaliable in the Office of Financial Aid.

Dave Draper, Sr. Memorial Scholarship
The Draper Memorial Church of God in Christ awards the Dave Draper, Sr. Memorial Scholarship in honor of the late Superintendent Dave Draper, Sr. who served as pastor of the church for over 35 years. He was a strong advocate of higher education and desired to see young people succeed. This scholarship is designed to provide assistance to students' in need and dedicated to pursuing their educational goals.
Eligibility:
- Be currently enrolled as a full-time student as a senior in high school (with acceptance to a 2-year or 4-year institution) or as a freshman, sophomore, junior or senior in a 2-year or 4-year institution.
- Have a 2.5 GPA or higher.
- Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident living in Madison, Marshall and Limestone counties.
- Finalist must attend the Scholarship Awards Banquet (finalist not able to attend must submit official documentation for requested excuse or forfeit award)

Bridgestone Firestone Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded in the amount of $500 and may be applied to tuition, fees and books, according to need, to students majoring in the Automotive Mechanics Program.
Application deadline: On-going
- Must be enrolled in the Automotive Mechanics Program
- Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- Must complete Bridgestone Firestone Scholarship Application
- Must submit two letters of recommendation; one personal and one scholastic
- Must be enrolled for at least three-quarters time (3/4)
- Must provide a copy of the most recent academic transcript
- Must provide a written statement of financial need
Engelhard Chemical Corporation Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded in an amount up $500 and may be applied to tuition, fees, and/or books, according to need, to students majoring in the following programs: Machine Tool Technology; Industrial Electricity, Welding, A/C and Refrigeration Technology, Industrial Electronics and Automotive Mechanics. Application deadline: On-going
- Must complete an Engelhard Scholarship Application
- Must have two letters of recommendation; one personal and one scholastic
- Must be enrolled at least three-quarters time (3/4)
- Must provide a copy of the most recent academic transcript
- Must provide a written statement of financial need
Judge Harris Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship provides financial assistance to students enrolled at J.F. Drake State Technical College in the Automotive Mechanics Technology Program, who intend to complete the program of study in the field of Automotive Mechanics and/or may already be employed in the field of Automotive Mechanics prior to applying for the scholarship. This scholarship will cover tuition, books, tools and certification expenses as long as the student meets eligibility criteria. Application deadline: On-going
- Must have a 2.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale
- Must not be a recipient of any other grants, including the Pell Grant
- Must demonstrate financial need
District 19/Representative Laura Hall Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded in the amount of $1,500 to cover tuition, books and fees. This scholarship is open to all students in all programs of study. Application deadline: On-going
- Must be a resident of the House of Representatives Legislative District 19 in Huntsville, Alabama at the time of initial application
- Must have a minimum of 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale
- Must be enrolled for a minimum of 12 hours
- Must demonstrate financial need
- Must re-apply each year as long as he/she continues to meet the criteria

The Alabama Home Builders Foundation
This scholarship is available in January to students enrolled in construction-related curriculum. Application deadline: On-going

Women's Economic Development Council Foundation Scholarship (WEDC)
This scholarship is to provide financial and mentoring support to adult women seeking an academic degree or technical training in order to become self-sufficient or to achieve significant advancement in their current employment. Special consideration is given to those responsible for dependent care. The grant amount ranges from $500 - $2500 and may be used for tuition, fees, books, dependent care, transportation or related expenses. It is preferred that the applicant be employed. Applications are available in January of each year and must be mailed to the WEDC Foundation by April 1. Application deadline: April 1
- Must have a high school diploma or GED
- Must be a Madison County resident
- Must have an annual household income, preferably, of less than 32,000

Women's Opportunity Award
This grant is awarded in the amount of $500 to women that are motivated to achieve their educational and career goals. Previous Women's Opportunity Award recipients are ineligible to apply. Women who already have an undergraduate degree are ineligible to apply. Soroptimists, employees of Soroptimist, and the immediate families of both are ineligible to apply.
- Must have been accepted into or attending vocational/skills training or undergraduate program.
- Must have financial need
- Must submit a completed grant application
- Must reside in one of the Soroptimist International of the Americas' member countries and territories. ( Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guam, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Taiwan, United States of America and Venezuela).
