Adult Summer Bridge Program

Dear Students:

In conjunction with the National Science Foundation, J. F. Drake State Technical College is pleased to announce the SPEED-UP Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Summer Bridge Program. This program is designed for adults who have completed high school or are currently working on their GED who would like to explore career opportunities in technology fields.

Offering classes, and a hands-on learning environment, Drake State has brought together a group of exciting instructors to provide students with an overview of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields. By taking a series of four classes in Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Computer Science, the STEM Summer Bridge program will aid students in making the move into college.  Students will learn to build a personal web page and explore physics simulations that are animated with game-like environments.

The two-month class will begin on June 2, 2008 and end on July 24, 2008. Classes will meet every Tuesday and Thursday, from 6:00pm to 10:00pm with each student taking classes in Mathematics, Physics, Biology, and Computer Sciences. As a part of this program, each student completing a minimum of half the program will receive a stipend of $8.50 per class hour completed. If a student attends all of the classes, he or she will receive $544.00 for their participation. As a result of the National Science Foundation’s sponsorship, this summer program will be offered for free to a limited number of applicants.  Please complete and submit the attached application by Friday, April 25, 2008.

If you have any questions concerning this program, please contact Mr. Russell Winn, SPEED-UP Program Director, J. F. Drake State Technical College, (256) 551-3121, (256) 551-1712, or via email at russell.winn@drakestate.edu.
