DRAKE STUDENTS WIN AT
NATIONAL SKILLS USA COMPETITION

 

Huntsville, Ala. – Drake State Technical College had several students to win awards during the 2008 Skills USA National Competitions in Kansas City, Missouri. Skills USA is a national non-profit organization which ensures a skilled workforce through partnerships between students, teachers, and industry.

The Skills USA competition enables students to demonstrate occupational and leadership skills. Winners receive gold, silver and bronze medals in an awards ceremony similar to the Olympics.

The following students were named winners at the competition:

  • Theo Walston, industrial electronics major - gold medal, computer maintenance technology competition

  • Trophy Thompson, engineering graphics major - gold medal, architectural drafting competition

  • Brandon Hydrick, industrial electronics major- silver medal, electronics application competition

  • Levi Shareck, industrial electronics major- silver medal, technical computer applications competition

  • Nicholas Ksepka, industrial electronics major-bronze medal, computer maintenance technology competition

  • Anthony Harris, industrial electronics major-bronze medal, electronics technology competition

    Additionally, Walston took and passed the CompTIA A+ Certification examination to become A+ certified.

At the national level Skills USA Championships, over 4,600 students compete in 84 occupational and leadership skill areas.

Ben Battle, cosmetology instructor; Nicole Bell, cosmetology instructor ; Nina Bullock, engineering graphics instructor; Michelle Cunningham, computer technology instructor; Christine Davis, electronics instructor; and Fred Pruitt, welding instructor all served as advisors for the 2008 Drake team.
