DRAKE STATE LAUNCHES ADULT
EDUCATION PROGRAM FOR MADISON COUNTY

Drake State Technical College was recently approved by the Alabama State Board of Education to launch an adult education program for the north Alabama service area. The College received an allocation of $178,000 from the 2007-2008 State Adult Education funds to assist in the marketing, recruitment, staffing, materials needs, and outreach of the new program.

“The adult education program will provide an essential service for the residents of North Alabama,” stated Dr. McAlpine, president of Drake State Technical College.

Drake’s adult education program offers adult basic education classes and general equivalency diploma (GED) preparation classes. The classes are offered in the morning, afternoon, and evening at the Drake Educational Complex located at 100 Orange Drive. There are also plans to open sites in the more rural areas of Madison County to encompass the communities of New Hope, Gurley, New Market, and Hazel Green.

After completing the classes, individuals will be able to take the GED test and qualify to receive their diploma.

Two staff members are currently operating the adult education program. Brenda McCray has been hired as the director of adult education and Susan Kreulen as the adult education instructor.

McCray previously worked for Pikes Peak Community College, City Colleges of Chicago, Central Texas College, and the State of Oklahoma. McCray has a bachelor’s degree from Troy University and a master’s degree from Webster University.

Kreulen formerly worked as an adult education English instructor with the Japanese Self Defense Forces in Tokyo, Japan. She has also worked as an elementary education teacher and counselor. Kreulen has a bachelor’s degree from Auburn University and a master’s degree from Troy University.
