Program Description, Mission, and Objectives

The Computer Information Systems Technology program is an Associate Degree and Certificate awarding program. Emphasis is placed on hands on training in the areas of microcomputer operating systems, applications, programming languages and networking equipment. After completing a degree in the Computer Information Systems Technology program, a student will have the skills to fulfill entry-level positions in computer support and operations, networking, and software development fields
in the industry.

The mission is to provide a program which is student centered and welcoming to a diverse population – training them in information technology areas which will enrich students' lives in all aspects.

The Information Technology program will prepare students for entry level employment, advancement, and industry certifications in information technology by teaching programming, networking, operating systems, web development, and cyber security using up-to-date methods and techniques that are prevalent in today’s marketplace. The Information Technology program awards short certificates and the Associate in Applied Science degree. We are a CompTIA and Cisco Academy, and we prepare our students to be successful by obtaining industry certification.
 

Career Opportunities

A graduate of the Computer Information Systems Technology program may become employed in many of the entry-level positions such as Computer Technician, Web Designer, Cyber Specialist, Computer Programmer, Help Desk Specialist, Computer Lab Manager, Database Analyst, Systems Analyst, Network Specialist, or Test Engineer.

Skills Needed

In order to be successful in the field of Computer Information Systems Technology, you must have above average analytical skills, keep abreast of changing computer technology, be a self motivated worker, and work well as part of a group.

 

Expected Earnings/Salary

Earnings for Computer Information Systems Technology graduates as reported by the 2012-2013 Occupational Outlook Handbook are as follows:

  • The median annual earnings of a computer support specialist are $46,260 annually.
  • The lowest 10 percent earned less than $28,300 per year.
  • The highest 10 percent earn more than $76,970 annually.

Types of Programs Offered

The Computer Information Systems Technology Program offers an Associate Degree in Applied Technology - Computer Information Systems Technology with the option to choose an emphasis in
Enterprise Programming,Networking, Software Applications, Systems Administrator, Technical Support, or Web Development.

A Career Entry Certificate is also available in Information Technology, Commercial Applications, Enterprise Programming, Network Administrator, Systems Administrator, Cyber Security, and Web Page Developer.
