Drake State Community and Technical College is offering free bootcamps for middle school and high school students through NASA's Minority University Research and Education Project (MUREP). This is an educational opportunity for underrepresented populations in STEM careers. Racially or ethnically underrepresented students (Hispanics and Latinos, African Americans, American Indians, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders) and female students are eligile to apply. Each bootcamp is a one-day event with lunch included. Students will learn from certified Drake State instructors. This is your first step toward a great career. Qualified candidates will receive a full scholarship to cover the cost of these bootcamps. Spots are limited.
DronesJuly 9Ages 14+8:30 am - 4:30 pmHigh school students will learn the fundamentals of unmanned flight, safety basics, overview of FAA rules for drone operation, and hands-on exercises in basic drone operation. The bootcamp will be taught by an experienced FAA-certified drone instructor.
Machine Tool Date TBAAges 15+Get exposed to the latest technology and equipment including saws, grinders, and computerized measuring machines. You'll learn what it takes to read blueprints and use machinery to shape metal with precision of less than a thousandth of an inch.Engineering Design Date TBAAges 13+Learn the basics of Computer Aided Design (CAD) software and use the latest 3D printing technology and equipment to create three-dimensional design projects like a rubber band car. Regular WeldingDate TBAAges 15+Love creating real-world projects? Learn the basics of metal fabricating and welding while using Gas Metal Arc Welding technologies. Each student will begin with the safety and set up of equipment. Then, get hands on in the lab.
RoboticsJuly 98:30 am - 4:30 pmThis bootcamp is an introduction to the world of robotics for high school students. They will participate in a design challenge to build a basic radio-controlled robot chassis.
Systems Engineering June 25Ages 15+8:30 am - 4:30 pmSystems Engineering is the discipline for creating complex systems such as rockets, airplanes, bridges, skyscrapers, and vehicles of all types. This class features hands-on simulations of rockets and spacecraft to demonstrate STEAM principles in a fun and stimulating day-long adventure. The class is open to rising high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
